Concerto Grosso III: Eino Tamberg
Par pasākumu
At the concert held at the House of the Blackheads in Tallinn’s Old Town, Eino Tamberg’s Concerto grosso will be performed, a work with a story of its creation that is just as fascinating as the piece itself. Tamberg had not originally intended to write a concerto grosso, but his wish to make use of the Estonian Radio Symphony Orchestra’s accomplished wind players led to a work for five wind instruments, piano, percussion and strings. Its lengthy original title was eventually replaced by one inspired by the centuries-old musical genre. The programme also features Typewriter Concerto in D by Tamberg’s student Alo Mattiisen, with a typewriter taking the role of the solo instrument. During the Soviet era, ownership of typewriters was strictly controlled by the state, as they were also used to reproduce banned texts. The rhythmic clatter of the typewriter thus takes on a symbolic meaning in the work, becoming associated with freedom, speaking the truth and protest. The concert offers an opportunity to discover Estonian music from an unexpected perspective, where classical music meets history, humour and unusual soundscapes.
